Ethics of research involving humans

In our society, people can exercise a wide range of choices. For example, we can choose our friends and partners, our dentists, doctors and schools. We can choose where we live, where we shop and what we want to buy, wear, watch and read. Our society offers us a lot of choices in terms of lifestyle, recreation, culture and social opportunities.

We place a high value on individual freedom and often think that having more choice automatically leads to this. If freedom is seen as a good thing, then we often assume that more products or processes that give us freedom must also be positive.
